In 1983, the Church issued a whole new code of canon law. As opposed to its predecessor, the 1983 Code of Canon Law did not explicitly identify Masonic orders Amongst the secret societies it condemns. It states: "A one who joins an Affiliation which plots versus the Church is always to be punished having a just penalty; one particular who promotes
